SMS limit and special characters: Free up space for your message!

Create and send long messages and get over character limits and restrictions without having extra costs by using Infobip NLI and SMS Transliteration.

September 23 2015

Character limitations and restrictions are the main obstacles you can encounter when growing a global business and trying to reach your clients with SMS.

Your business has the option of creating and sending long messages but you surely don't like the cost of doing so. National Language Identifier offered by Infobip is an encoding technology which allows an SMS containing language-specific characters usually treated as 16-bit Unicode to be delivered as original text, while deducting only 5 characters from the maximum SMS length. This way you get 155 characters instead of the usual 70 characters if using Unicode.

Supported values are:

  • TR for Turkish
  • ES for Spanish
  • PT for Portuguese
POST /sms/1/text/advanced HTTP/1.1
Host: api.infobip.com
Authorization: Basic QWxhZGRpbjpvcGVuIHNlc2FtZQ==
Content-Type: application/json

{
   "messages":[
      {
         "from":"InfoSMS",
         "destinations":[
            {
               "to":"41793026727"
            }
         ],
         "text":"Artık Ulusal Dil Tanımlayıcısı ile Türkçe karakterli smslerinizi rahatlıkla iletebilirsiniz.",
         "language":{
            "languageCode":"TR",
            "singleShift":true,
            "lockingShift":false
         }
      }
   ]
}

And the response will be:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Type: application/json

{
   "messages":[
      {
         "to":"41793026727",
         "result":{
            "groupId":0,
            "groupName":"ACCEPTED",
            "id":0,
            "name":"MESSAGE_ACCEPTED",
            "description":"Message accepted"
         },
         "smsCount":1,
         "messageId":"324568a4b19-caf1-7dd56-34be-65321ab6d9a2"
      }
   ]
}

*Important: Since certain networks don't support the Language feature, we can't guarantee that this functionality will work for all destinations.

You can also convert SMS message text from one script to another with our Transliteration method. With this method you can send messages in your preferred alphabet and they will be automatically converted into the appropriately transliterated script. This way you can use the full capacity of the message text without sending any Unicode characters.

Supported alphabets:

  • "TURKISH"
  • "GREEK"
  • "CYRILLIC"
  • "CENTRAL_EUROPEAN"

The example below shows how to send a transliterated message. Just put one of the supported alphabets in the transliteration parameter.

POST /sms/1/text/advanced HTTP/1.1
Host: api.infobip.com
Authorization: Basic QWxhZGRpbjpvcGVuIHNlc2FtZQ==
Content-Type: application/json

{
    "messages":[
        {
            "from":"InfoSMS",
            "destinations":[
                {
                    "to":"41793026727"
                }
            ],
            "text":"Ως Μεγαρικό ψήφισμα είναι γνωστή η απόφαση της Εκκλησίας του δήμου των Αθηναίων (πιθανόν γύρω στο 433/2 π.Χ.) να επιβάλει αυστηρό και καθολικό εμπάργκο στα",
            "transliteration":"GREEK"
        }
    ]
}

And the response will be:
