Reaching a wide group of people in order to deliver a message can be a slow and time consuming process. Telephone calling uses large resources, and isn’t always guaranteed to get the message across. Email is a popular alternative to phoning, but even with the increased use of internet connected smartphones it is not guaranteed that mails are read as soon as they are delivered.

SMS offers an efficient method of delivering information to a wide audience at a significantly lower cost than would be had if using emails or printed newsletters.

The instantaneous delivery and the bi-directional capabilities make it a perfect mechanism for conversational style communication and this derives strong benefits when compared to other contact methods, like telephone and email.

Communication with the deaf and hearing impaired community

Communication with deaf and hearing-impaired people has traditionally relied on methods such as sign language, teletype (TTY, and more recently, email and Instant Messaging (IM). Whilst each of these methods has merit, they can become expensive for everyday use, and may have other limitations.

SMS is an ideal technology for communicating with the deaf and hearing-impaired. Unlike other technology specifically designed for deaf and hearing-impaired people SMS does not require specialist equipment or rely on an expensive intermediary to translate messages back and forth.
