Learn about the mandatory sender ID registration requirements for Austria and how to register your alphanumeric sender IDs in compliance with Austrian regulations.

The Austrian regulator RTR GmbH is introducing a national sender ID registry for alphanumeric A2P SMS traffic. The registry is managed through the eRTR portal.

All alphanumeric sender IDs used to send A2P SMS to Austrian mobile subscribers must be:

  • Registered
  • Approved by the regulator
  • Imported into the national registry
NOTERegistration is free of charge. Infobip submits sender registration requests to operators on behalf of customers. You do not need to register directly with RTR.

Who is affected?

This regulation applies to:

  • All businesses sending A2P SMS
  • Using alphanumeric sender IDs (for example, a brand name or company name as the sender)
  • Targeting Austrian mobile subscribers
NOTENumeric long numbers and short codes are not affected by this regulation (unless otherwise specified by operators).

What you need to register

For each alphanumeric sender ID, provide the following information:

  • Requested sender ID
  • Associated brand name
  • Official web domain
  • Primary sender link (URL associated with the brand or campaign)
  • Type of SMS use (for example, OTP, marketing, transactional)

Registration process

Existing sender IDs (pre-registration) [#existing-sender-ids-pre-registration-registration-process]

Pre-registration of existing sender IDs is in progress. If you send traffic to Austria, your sender is eligible for pre-registration.

  1. Contact your dedicated account manager or Support.
  2. Infobip submits eligible sender IDs for approval through the operator.

New or updated sender IDs [#new-or-updated-sender-ids-registration-process]

Once regular registration becomes available:

  1. Submit sender registration requests through the Infobip web interface or API.
  2. Infobip forwards the request to the relevant Austrian mobile network operator (MNO).
  3. Infobip notifies you when submissions open.

Approval process [#approval-process-registration-process]

The Austrian regulator (RTR) may take up to 20 days to approve a sender registration request. Once approved, the sender ID can be used nationwide across all permitted SMS routes.

The mobile network operator that first obtains approval for a sender ID is considered the sender owner.

NOTEIf a sender ID is deleted from the registry, the same sender ID cannot be re-registered for 30 days.

What happens if you do not register?

From October 1, 2026, unregistered alphanumeric sender IDs are blocked:

  • Messages are not delivered
  • No fallback is applied
  • Delivery failures occur at the network level

To avoid disruption, ensure all sender IDs are submitted and approved before the enforcement date.
