What is SIM box detection?

SIM box detection is a way to detect fraudulent application-to-person (A2P) messaging sent using a SIM box via person-to-person (P2P) routes.

A SIM Box is a particular device that contains multiple unregistered and disposable pre-paid SIM cards. These cards deliver A2P or fraudulent messaging at a meager cost (or even no cost), giving fraudsters a high-profit margin. SIM Box detection is one of the operators’ most challenging fraud prevention tasks.

Analyzing P2P traffic is extremely sensitive because:

  • There are many senders
  • Most traffic is genuine and must be protected
  • Fraudsters react fast to preventative measures by developing new methods

All preventative methods must filter fraudulent traffic quickly and accurately without impacting regular traffic.

What is a SIM card swap hack?

SIM swapping is when fraudsters take control of your phone number. They can access your bank accounts, social media accounts, and more with your phone number. SIM swap attacks do not happen overnight. Before they try to impersonate you, they harvest your data. They use several tactics like phishing emails or malware.
