SIM box detection is a way to detect fraudulent application-to-person (A2P) messaging sent using a SIM Box via person-to-person (P2P) routes.
A SIM Box is a particular device that contains multiple unregistered and disposable pre-paid SIM cards. These cards are used to deliver A2P or fraudulent messaging at a very low cost (or even no cost), giving fraudsters a high-profit margin.
SIM Box detection is one of the most challenging fraud prevention tasks operators currently face. Analyzing P2P traffic is extremely sensitive because:
- There are many senders
- Most traffic is genuine and must be protected
- Fraudsters react fast to preventative measures by developing new methods
All preventative methods must filter fraudulent traffic quickly and accurately without impacting regular traffic.
