We’ve already seen how Network APIs are transforming the telecom industry, but there’s more: they have the potential to reshape industries far beyond it.

During a hackhathon on Shift Conference in Zadar, developers got creative, showing off unexpected ways to put these APIs to work.

We caught up with Filip Cimermancic (Project Manager, Infobip) to dig into the different ways developers are using Network APIs, the challenges they tackled along the way, and how these tools could shake up industries like banking and transportation.

Want to see true magic? Try combining Network APIs in new ways!

During the Ideathon, developers creatively integrated multiple Network APIs at various stages of the user experience, seamlessly weaving them into their applications to enhance the overall journey.

“What surprised me most was how effectively developers combined various Network APIs to elevate specific parts of their applications,” he said.

“It really shows the untapped potential of these APIs when used together.”

This also illustrates that true innovation often stems from creatively combining existing APIs rather than just creating new ones – and that potential should be fully utilized.

Network APIs could revolutionize industries outside of telecom

We’ve already mentioned that network APIs are ready to shake things up beyond the telecom industry. According to Cimermancic, one area where they’re set to make a big splash is in fraud prevention and authentication.

“Telecom operators have access to unique data about phone numbers that no other source can provide,” he explains. Leveraging this information to identify users by their phone numbers could significantly enhance security in various industries, including banking.

As Cimermancic points out, the rise of applications using phone numbers as user IDs -at least in part of the user journey – makes this data increasingly valuable.

“Network APIs also reveal operator-specific data that was previously unavailable, such as SIM swap timestamps, connectivity status, and roaming information,” he added. This creates numerous opportunities to enrich user journeys with these insights.

How can we dive deeper into Network APIs?

For developers looking to explore the world of Network APIs, Cimemrmancic emphasized resources available through the Camara project – a collaborative, open-source initiative.

“All documentation is public, and developers can easily dive into the Camara Project GitHub page or visit the Camara website and Backlog of Network APIs (live and proposed ones),” he shared.

These resources provide developers with a solid foundation to understand how to integrate and innovate with Network APIs, opening up a world of possibilities for future applications.

So, what are you waiting for?
