What is SMSC (short message service center)?

A short message service center (SMSC) is a mobile telecommunication network element that stores, forwards, converts, and delivers SMS messages and maintains unique timestamps in text messages.

What is the role of SMSC?

The primary duty of an SMSC is to route SMS messages and regulate the process. If the recipient is unavailable (for example, when the mobile phone is off), the SMSC will store the message. When the recipient is available or the message’s expiry period exceeds, it will forward the SMS message.
